It works by sending a harmless data file to your computer and then sending it back to this page, while timing how long it takes.
The data file contains only random data and is not stored on your computer.

REMEMBER!  The speed of your connection is 'Up-To' the speed sold.  Due to normal envirnomental factors the actual speed delivered to your location will vary.  Maximization of speed depends on your computer, the Internet network, and other capacities. 

Network Traffic
Think of the way your data flows as a system of roads.  Each road has its capacity and speed limit.  At stop signs or traffic signals, you may have to wait while other traffic passes.  Similarly your data travels over many routes.  Each route has a total capacity and data rate.  During "rush hour" (peak traffic times) your data may have to wait while someone else's data passes.

Overhead
Wrapped around the data you send is "overhead" that may range from 5 to 20 percent of the total.  This extra information ensures that the packets of information are sent and received correctly, and that the packets arrive at the proper destination.  As connection speed increased the overhead will be proportionally less.
